( WARNING: LONG POST) This is quite a controversial topic right now on Twitter, with the majority of VIXX fans seemingly siding with Hongbin and entirely blaming Jellyfish. But, I felt it was time to finally give my two cents on the situation. Now before we dive in, it's important to note that this isn't going to be some defense piece on Jellyfish (as a company) overall. Sure, the management is in desperate need of improvement. But I think the response from a large number of Starlights online regarding this topic has reached a very concerning point. Also I find it highly inappropriate that HB's situation is being placed on the same pedestal as Wonho's situation. Aside from both fandoms suffering the same heartbreak of their bias groups enduring member departures, Wonho's case involved him being falsely accused of a major crime that he was later proven innocent of. And two, he was removed from his group only days after the incident occurred. Hongbin's situation, however, is different in that there is video of that night in question online & his involvement, as well as the length of whole ordeal.
Sundays, 4:00 PM EST on BBC One Tracked 211 Times Concluded 1 Seasons, 3 Episodes 60 Minutes Wealthy philanthropist Rachel Argyll is murdered at her family estate Sunny Point. Her adopted son Jack Argyll, a young delinquent, is arrested for her murder. He vehemently protests his innocence. Eighteen months later, Dr Arthur Calgary, a mysterious scientist, walks onto the velvety lawns of Sunny Point claiming to have just returned from an expedition to the Arctic. Even more extraordinary is his claim to hold the alibi that can prove Jack's innocence.
To clarify, I've been a Starlight since 2012/2013, and Hongbin was my bias, too. But as much as he deserves happiness & success and should not have been degraded in the manner he was by people online & anti's by any means even with his numerous apologies, it would be ignorant to place all of the blame on his company without all of the evidence, or dismiss any of Hongbin's actions/words as completely frivolous & unquestionable when they weren't. Yes, Hongbin is an adult who is allowed to express himself, but he also should have been wise enough to know of the possibile ramifications due to his actions. TL;DR: Hongbin leaving VIXX has been both a shocking & (understandably) grief-stricken experience for many Starlights. However, while the intense emotions are valid, throwing around baseless accusations out of emotion such as blaming Jellyfish for the whole entire incident & Hongbin's exit is not the answer. He, as a seasoned entertainer, should've been more aware that he wasn't just a streamer, but also an idol in a popular group & still a representative of his company.

If Jellyfish wanted him gone as badly as fans claim, then they would not have taken months to do so. Not only was he placed on a hiatus, but the company themselves later announced that legal action would be taken, despite claims from fans that nothing was ever done to address the matter. Hongbin leaving the fancafe before the official exit statement's release likely also acted a a catalyst for the huge amount of fan concern & uproar that soon followed. Maybe he considered leaving it before and discussed it with his members over the hiatus, or left it to end the constant onslaught of hate for good? But alas, we don't know yet. Hongbin also took it upon himself to go live on Twitch drunk, not only delivering poorly worded opinions that ended up being easily misconstrued by fandoms of the artists involved (who, mind you, likely weren't accustomed to his bluntness), but also gave the camera & viewers the middle finger. Members Leo & Ravi even had to apologize on his behalf due to his behavior then impacting the group.
Yet even with that, the company still kept him in VIXX. Whether or not fans see this as something problematic, it's no question that optics are a huge deal in K-Pop. Things can, and will be taken out of context, especially among the wrong crowd, and unfortunately Hongbin opened himself up to that can of worms. As much as some upset Starlights won't acknowledge it, Hongbin should have kept in mind that he was still an idol who not only represented his group (and a well-respected one at that in South Korea), but also his company as well. He just so happened to also stream on Twitch. Anyone who has kept up with VIXX over the past few years also knows that Hongbin's passion for outlets like gaming & streaming had only begun to outgrow his passion for being a singer, so it's not too surprising to see him leaving altogether. Was it quite sudden & a shock to many? Absolutely. But unlike many internal conflicts inside Jellyfish, Hongbin leaving isn't as hard to piece together as some may think.
It's okay to defend our faves & want to protect their reputation from any malicious events, but we also have to be honest with ourselves and know when they've made an ill-advised decision. They're not just celebrities, but also humans like the rest of us.
