Sung-chil is a grumpy 70-year-old man who lives alone and works part-time at the local supermarket. Jang-soo, owner of the supermarket and president of the city's redevelopment project, has been trying in vain to get Sung-chil's signature (he's the last hold-out and the only reason for the project's delay), but Sung-chil stubbornly refuses any change to his lifestyle. It may seem strange that Geum-nim, the newcomer, would agree to do such things, but the truth is far more heartbreaking. Throughout the movie, we see the transformation of Sung-chil, from a grumpy disagreeable gramps, to a more cheerful elder when Geum-nim enters his life. They go for dates at the theme park, learn waltz, basically being there for each other. However towards the end of the movie, the relevation happens and that's when I start to see what had happened so far in the movie, in a new light, which adds to the poignancy of the movie. Salut D'Amour is a simple story with no dramatic tones, the storytelling is grounded and fluid, with an impactful take home message. If you like Up, you'd like this.
